Education

Education plans an integral part in the life of all young people within the Good Shepherd Centre. There is a commitment to the provision of high quality education appropriate to the needs of individual young people. Many of the young people placed at the Centre have complex educational needs which are addressed through small group or individual tuition.

Each young person is encouraged to take part in an appropriate age and stage programme. The curriculum is innovative and stimulating whilst addressing any gaps in educational and social progress. The Centre offers a secondary based curriculum encompassing 5 - 14 Curriculum, a full Standard Grade Programme and a varied option of National Units ranging from Access 2 to Intermediate 2.

Courses are taught in English, Mathematics, Science, Art, Modern Languages, Social Science, PSE, Vocational Skills, Physical Education, Home Economics and Practical Skills.

The Centre offers a wide range of out of school experiences which are invariable to the social development of the young people.

All pupils are offered the opportunity to participate in a Careers Guidance Course and will have a work experience placement during their time at the Centre.

All young people have an allocated tutor within education who works alongside the keyworker in the formulation and implementation of an Individualised Educational Plan. This plan is included in the overall care strategy and tutors plan an important role at Review meetings held to chart progress being made.

Parents / Guardians are informed of their child's progress both formally and informally. Reports on achievement and attainment are sent to Parents / Guardians and Social Workers at appropriate times in the school year.

The Centre is committed to the implementation of A Curriculum for Excellence and is currently developing courses in Enterprise and Citizenship which will ensure that all of our young people are afforded the ongoing educational opportunity to which they are entitled.
